Move By Brevard To Online Legal Notices Will Potentially Save Thousands

The rise of digital media and technology has transformed the way we access our news and entertainment. Total estimated weekday circulation of U.S. daily newspapers was 55.8 million in 2000. It dropped to 24.2 million by 2020, according to Editor & Publisher and the Pew Research Center. Since then it has slid even further, and now it is having an effect on one local newspaper. In Brevard County, legal ads may soon be moved totally online and out of the newspaper. It comes after a unanimous vote Tuesday by the Brevard County Commission. County leaders say they can save taxpayer’s money by moving notices about meetings, zoning changes, and other county business online instead of paying to place the ads in Florida Today. Brevard County leaders say in the 2021-22 budget year, they paid more than $79,000 to place legal ads in the local newspaper.
