The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is coordinating manatee rescue efforts in all of Florida’s 67 counties, including Brevard County. Reports of injured or sick manatees are investigated, and field responses are being carried out for those that require rescue interventions. The stepped up efforts come about due to what animal experts refer to as the Unusual Mortality Event along our Atlantic coast. Researchers say you can do your part by giving manatees some extra space when you see them. When on a watercraft, slow down and look out for manatees. You can also report sightings of sick, injured, or dead manatees by calling the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).
