update on sargassum

We recently told you about that giant mass of sargassum that is headed toward Florida, but now scientists say it may not be as bad as originally feared. The Keys could begin to see some of it before the end of this month though. The massive sargassum bloom extends from near the coast of Africa, through the Caribbean and into the Gulf of Mexico. But now, those who are keeping a close eye on it, say the blob has decreased in size since January, and that could hopefully mean it won’t be the record-breaker they originally feared it would be. Still, the 6.1 million tons of seaweed that continues to head west, remains the second largest amount recorded during the month of February, according to the University of South Florida.
