Some good news for a change this morning concerning that massive seaweed blob that is already hitting many Florida beaches… bringing with it flesh-eating bacteria. It’s getting smaller. What started out as a huge 5,000 square mile blob of sargassum has now shrunk by about 15% from April to May. Researchers at the University of South Florida say it is a part of what’s called the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt, which stretches from west Africa to the Gulf of Mexico, and it all started washing up on beaches here in Florida in early April. The 15% shrinkage marks the first time it has shrunk during this time of year since 2011 when studies of the seaweed first began. Scientists still don’t know why it shows such a sharp decrease, but they now say they expect the sargassum quantity to continue to decrease in June.
