Seaweed May Present Additional Problem

A huge blob of seaweed is beginning to make some Florida beaches stink, and while the mats of floating sargassum provide great habitat for marine life, it can be a problem for beachgoers. The massive blob is some 5,000 miles wide, and it is headed straight for Florida. While the seaweed itself can be a deterrent for some folks who otherwise might head to the beach, it also can be a health hazard. Researchers say it has also been found to hold deadly flesh-eating bacteria. That particular bacteria can cause infections if exposed to open wounds, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. They say an “open wound” can include piercings, tattoos or recent surgery.
