Airport Takes Aim At Media Created Naming Error

While the official code designation for Orlando International Airport is MCO, some media sources continue to erroneously refer to it as OIA, and that can cause a lot of confusion for travelers to Central Florida, who discover when they try to look up OIA, that it doesn’t exist. The airport now is taking steps to make sure that everyone knows that media reports calling it OIA are just plain wrong… It’s really MCO. They even tweeted about it recently. Orlando International Airport was originally a military base known as Pinecastle Army Airfield. In 1958 it was renamed McCoy Air Force Base, and it was designated MCO. In 1976 it became Orlando International Airport, but the code never changed. There is actually an airport named OIA, but it’s not in Florida. In fact, it’s not even in the United States. It’s in Brazil and it isn’t even operating anymore, and that little fact can be a big problem for travelers who are in a hurry and looking for flights… especially international travelers. Trying to make a flight reservation using OIA could end up sending you anywhere on earth… other than Orlando!
