A Loooooong Trip On The Auto Train

It’s the peak of snowbird season here in Florida, and many of our northern friends arrive here with their cars via the Amtrak Auto Train, which runs from a suburb of Washington, DC to Sanford. The train, with 563 passengers and 333 vehicles departed Lorton, Virginia at 5pm Monday, and was scheduled to arrive in Sanford yesterday morning at 10. But that isn’t how it worked out. The planned 17-hour journey experienced significant delays caused by a freight derailment, and when the train finally rolled into the station in Sanford early this morning, it was the conclusion of what turned out to be a 37-hour trip that had been delayed by almost 20 hours. The southbound Amtrak Auto Train had to be detoured off its normal route due to the derailment of a CSX freight train Monday night, forcing it to come to a stop in Denmark, South Carolina. All other Auto Train service on Tuesday was cancelled.
