Lizard Warning!

So far, they have not been a big issue in most of Central Florida, but not so far south of us, tegu lizards are becoming a very big issue… and a big problem. Now, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is asking people to help stop the lizard’s march north. Tegus may be spreading faster than biologists can trap them. Sightings of the big lizards are increasing in St. Lucie County where it’s believed they originated from escapes or releases involving the exotic pet trade. So far, more than 12,000 tegus statewide have been removed from the wild, but now they are beginning to show up just south of Brevard… in Indian River County. They are a threat to native species because they eat gopher tortoise eggs and alligator eggs.
